Mr. Strauss was born into a large family (nine brothers and sisters) in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Drury University in Springfield, Missouri and graduated from Drury with a business degree and minors in economics and political science. He received his law degree from St. Louis University and has been licensed to practice law in Missouri since 1986 (in Illinois since 1987).
